Eastern Howard County
All About Eastern Howard County, MD
Along the corridor of Interstate 95 and Route 295 (the Baltimore Washington Expressway) on the eastern edge of the County lies the Eastern Howard County region. The communities here are suburban, but are somewhat denser than the western or southern regions of Howard County due to the commercial influence of Columbia and the almost immediate access to major interstates, airports and rail lines. The residents of Eastern Howard County have easy access to Fort Meade, the headquarters of the National Security Agency, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the Baltimore Washington International Airport.Despite the flavor of modern industry, Eastern Howard County strikes a balance with its historic towns of Elkridge and Savage. Elkridge, formerly Elk Ridge Landing, was founded along the scenic Patapsco River hundreds of years ago and was likely the first settlement and formal industrial center in the County. Farmers from all over Central Maryland brought their goods to Elkridge to be loaded onto sea vessels sailing to England. Many of the historical structures remain, along with dozens of new townhouse and single family subdivisions. At the southern end of the Eastern Howard County region is the old mill town of Savage, where the ancient Savage Mill can be found. The old mill now operates as a modern antique and arts center and attracts shoppers from all over the region. Like Elkridge, Savage balances old and new with its historic structures, including the only remaining Bollman Truss Bridge in the entire world, along with its new residential developments. Eastern Howard County is also home to a large portion of Patapsco State Park and is the closest to Annapolis, Maryland the Chesapeake Bay of any other region of the County.
